Choosing Fragrance by Feeling, Not by Scent

Why Do We Usually Choose Fragrance by Scent Notes?
When shopping for fragrance, we’re often asked the same question:
Do you prefer floral?
Woody?
Fresh?
Citrus?
These categories describe what a fragrance smells like.
But they rarely explain how living with that fragrance actually feels.
After all, most people don’t light a candle because it contains cedarwood or bergamot.
They light it because they want to relax after work.
To feel inspired while creating.
Or simply to make a room feel like home.
Perhaps we’ve been asking the wrong question.
Instead of asking:
“What does this smell like?”
What if we asked:
“How do I want this space to feel?”
Fragrance Shapes More Than Scent
The atmosphere of a room is created by many elements.
Light.
Materials.
Sound.
Temperature.
And scent.
As an interior designer, I’ve always believed that fragrance is another material for shaping space.
It’s invisible, yet it changes how we experience a room.
A quiet bedroom doesn’t only look calm.
It smells calm.
A creative studio doesn’t only contain inspiring objects.
Its atmosphere invites creativity.
Choosing fragrance by feeling naturally became part of the way I design spaces.
From Scent Notes to Emotional Rituals
When creating Ranul Sense, I realised I didn’t want to organise fragrances the same way most brands do.
Instead of fragrance families, I created five emotional rituals.
Each botanical fragrance belongs to one of them.
- Grounding — Return to yourself.
- Shield — Create a gentle sanctuary.
- Connect — Feel more alive.
- Expand — Let curiosity lead.
- Transition — Pause. Reset. Begin again.
Rather than describing ingredients, these rituals describe the experience each fragrance is designed to support.
A Different Way to Choose Fragrance
Perhaps the question isn’t:
“Do I like woody scents?”
Perhaps it’s:
“What do I need today?”
Maybe today you need Grounding.
Tomorrow you might seek Connection.
Another day calls for Transition.
The fragrance hasn’t changed.
You have.
More Than a Scent Collection
The Ranul Sense Ritual Map isn’t a product collection.
It’s a way of thinking about fragrance as part of everyday life.
A way of designing atmosphere intentionally.
Because fragrance isn’t only something we smell.
It’s something we remember.
Something we live with.
Something that quietly shapes how a space feels.
Discover the Ranul Sense Ritual Map and explore botanical fragrances designed around the way you want to feel, not simply the way you want your home to smell.
