There are days when my studio is filled with scent — layers of citrus, resin, and smoke floating in the air like thoughts that haven’t settled.
And then, there are the quiet days.
When nothing seems to work.
When I stop blending, stop testing, and just listen.
It took me a long time to understand that silence is also part of creating. That stillness — the space between one scent and the next — is where something invisible begins to grow.
When Nothing Smells Right
Sometimes, I can spend hours surrounded by tiny bottles, testing combination after combination. Lavender and cedarwood feel too calm. Vetiver feels too heavy. Bergamot disappears too quickly. And after a while, everything starts to blur together.
On those days, I open the window. I let the Berlin air come in — the smell of rain, metal, dust, and life outside. It reminds me that scent doesn’t only live inside a bottle. It’s everywhere, waiting quietly.
That’s usually when inspiration returns — not as an idea, but as a feeling.
The Rhythm of Breathing and Waiting
Working with natural scents has taught me patience. Essential oils move at their own pace. A blend that smells unbalanced today might soften overnight.
Like people, scents need time to rest.
And I do, too.
I’ve learned to breathe between my work — to wait before I decide what’s missing. That pause, that silence, often leads to the most unexpected harmony.
Because creation isn’t only about mixing; it’s about listening. Listening to the oils, to the air, to what my emotions are quietly saying.
